5 Hidden Gems Near Lake Wildwood Worth Knowing Before You Move

Lakefront home with private dock and boat cover on Lake Wildwood in Penn Valley, Nevada County CA

Most people looking at Lake Wildwood start with the lake, the golf course, and the gate. All good reasons. But I have lived in Nevada County for over 40 years, and the hidden gems near Lake Wildwood are what keep my clients here long after the move-in boxes are unpacked.

Lake Wildwood sits in Penn Valley, about 10 miles west of Grass Valley. That location puts you close to some of the best outdoor spots in the Sierra Foothills. Here are five I send people to.

1. Bridgeport Covered Bridge, Now Open Again

About nine miles north of Penn Valley, the Bridgeport Covered Bridge spans the South Yuba River inside South Yuba River State Park. It was built in 1862 and runs just over 229 feet, which makes it one of the longest single-span wooden covered bridges in the country.

It closed in 2011 because of structural problems and reopened on November 4, 2021, after a local group raised money to restore it. On summer weekends, docents offer gold panning lessons by the visitor center. Call (530) 432-2546 to confirm before you go.

2. Buttermilk Bend Trail for Yuba River Views

This is a moderate hike with big river views, and it is well marked. It is at its best in spring when the wildflowers are out. If you are wondering what a normal Saturday looks like when you live near Lake Wildwood, this is a good answer.

Bring water and sturdy shoes. It is a real trail, not a stroll.

3. Spenceville Wildlife Area and Fairy Falls

Spenceville Wildlife Area covers about 11,900 acres of oak and gray pine woodland, with a Penn Valley address on Spenceville Road. You can hike, ride horses, bike the graveled roads, or just watch wildlife. The Fairy Falls trail starts here, and the roads in are bumpy, so take it slow.

One practical note. The area is open to hunting in the fall and closed to all hunting from February 1 through August 31, apart from spring turkey season. In hunting season I would wear bright colors and check the California Department of Fish and Wildlife closures page first.

4. Englebright Lake for Boating and Fishing

If you want a bigger body of water than your neighborhood lake, Englebright Lake is nearby for boating and fishing. It is nice to have both options within a short drive.

5. Lake Wildwood's Own Backyard

The last gem is the community itself. The private lake is about 300 acres, and the gated community also has parks, trails, tennis and pickleball courts, an 18-hole golf course, and a clubhouse that hosts social events. Many buyers tour the lake and never walk the trails, which is a shame. If you are considering Lake Wildwood, spend an hour on foot before you decide.

A Simple Weekend Plan Near Lake Wildwood

When clients ask me what they would actually do out here, I give them a simple weekend. Saturday morning, hike Buttermilk Bend while it is cool. Head to the Bridgeport Covered Bridge for lunch and a look at the river, and stop at the visitor center. Sunday, play nine holes or take the boat out, and finish with dinner back in Penn Valley.

That is not a tourist itinerary. It is a normal weekend for a lot of my clients, and none of it needs a long drive. For many buyers coming from the Bay Area or Sacramento, that is the whole point of the move.

Fall is a good time to explore all of this. Summer heat has eased, the trails are quieter, and you can see how the area feels once the weekend crowds thin out. If you are house hunting, that is useful information. Visit on a weekday as well as a weekend so you know what the neighborhood is really like.

What This Means If You Are Buying Near Lake Wildwood

Where you live decides how much of this you actually use. Lake Wildwood is gated and has its own amenities, so a lot of daily life stays inside the gate. The rest of the list is a short drive away, which is a big part of why Penn Valley appeals to people who want quiet and room to roam. If you are weighing it against a bigger town, my Penn Valley guide is a good next read.
