6 Summer Adventures the Whole Family Will Love in Nevada County

by Bob Sawyer

Looking for a fun, easy getaway that’ll keep everyone in the family happy? Just a short drive into the Sierra foothills, Nevada County delivers big on summer fun. Whether you're into nature, culture, food, or just soaking up sunshine, there's something here for all ages (and energy levels). Here are some of our favorite summer-ready activities to check out:

1. Camp Under the Stars—or Glamp Near Town

Nevada County has all kinds of camping, from rustic sites tucked deep in the Tahoe National Forest to stylish glamping at Inn Town Campground, walking distance from downtown Nevada City. One of my favorites - we go every year - is Sardine Lake, just above Sierra City. Whether you're a “tent and trail mix” kind of crew or prefer something a little cozier with showers and coffee nearby, there’s a perfect spot waiting. Explore camping options here.

2. Spend the Day in Truckee

Truckee is a dream for families. You can hit the Ridgeline Nature Trail, which is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, then swing by Truckee River Regional Park for a shaded playground or even a mini train ride (select Saturdays, 11am–2pm). And for little ones up to age 7, the KidZone Museum is full of interactive, imagination-sparking play—from science to fairy tales. This town blends outdoor charm with hands-on fun.

3. Celebrate Summer at Local Festivals

Nevada County’s summer calendar is packed with events worth the drive. Stroll through Truckee Thursdays or Nevada City’s Art Walk Fridays to experience the creative heartbeat of the community. June brings storytelling magic, and August marks the return of the beloved Nevada County Fair (August 6–10), known as one of the best rural county fairs in the country. There are also Hot Summer nights in Nevada City.

4. Tour the County, One Ice Cream at a Time

You could plan an entire day around just tasting the best frozen treats in the area—no judgment here. Favorites include:

5. Get Outside and Explore

This is what summer’s all about: bike rides, hikes, lakeside picnics, and impromptu forest adventures. Whether you're into horseback riding, fishing, boating, or just following your feet down a trail, Nevada County is a playground for outdoor lovers. You’ll find everything from easy urban paths to remote forest hikes with no cell service (and that’s kind of the point, right?).

6. Make a Splash

From mountain lakes to backyard pools, Nevada County offers tons of ways to cool off. If you’re heading to the Yuba River, be sure to check flow conditions—early summer snowmelt can make it dangerous. As a safer (and equally beautiful) alternative, head to Donner LakeScott’s Flat Lake, or a local swimming pool. Float, paddle, swim, or sunbathe—it’s all part of the summer ritual.

Nevada County has so many activities. Pack the snacks, grab the kids (and maybe your swimsuit), and make some memories this summer.
