Beer Lover's Guide to the Sierra Foothills of California
If you know me, you know I like my beer. And not just any beer—I'm talking about fresh-poured, locally brewed, hop-forward, lovingly crafted pints served up in places with real character. Lucky for me (and you), California’s Sierra Foothills are packed with exactly that. Between Nevada County and Placer County, there’s a string of breweries, tap houses, and cideries (well, that's more to my wife's liking) that I keep coming back to—and always recommend when someone asks where to go.So whether you’re out for a weekend in gold country or just looking for a new place to sip something cold, here are some of my favorite spots.
The Station Public House – Auburn, CA
Right in the middle of Auburn, The Station House feels like a neighborhood hangout where the beer selection is expansive and always has great options. It’s part beer garden, part gastropub, and totally one of my go-to spots for a casual afternoon or an easy dinner with a great pint.
Auburn Alehouse – Auburn, CA
Classic, comfortable, and full of history—Auburn Alehouse is a staple in Old Town. They brew everything on-site, and their Gold Digger IPA never misses. It’s a great spot for lunch or dinner, especially if you want a side of ambiance with your beer.
Moonraker Brewing – Auburn, CA
One of my go-to's. Moonraker doesn’t play it safe—they’re always experimenting, especially with IPAs. If you’re into hazies, doubles, or anything with a bold flavor, you’ll want to spend some time in their tasting room. Expect juicy hazy IPAs, tropical sours, and a fun, laid-back vibe.
Knee Deep Brewing Company – Auburn, CA
Another hop-heavy hitter, Knee Deep delivers big West Coast energy. Their lineup is full of high-ABV hop bombs, but they’ve also got some sneaky-good lighter styles. Favorites like Breaking Bud and Hoptologist DIPA anchor a lineup that’s both consistent and creative. The tasting room is spacious, casual, and always buzzing with beer lovers who appreciate hop-forward excellence.
Crooked Lane Brewing Company – Auburn, CA
Crooked Lane mixes old-world brewing with new-world creativity. Their Kölsch and Oktoberfest are some of the best around, and the patio’s a great place to unwind. They’re low-key, consistent, and always worth a visit.
Poderosa Cider – Auburn, CA
Not a brewery, but a gem in its own right—Poderosa makes killer small-batch cider with local apples. It’s refreshing, a little funky in the best way, and a nice change of pace from hops and barley.
Hillenbrand Farmhaus Brewery – Newcastle, CA
A little off the beaten path in Newcastle, but that’s part of the charm. Hillenbrand is farmhouse-style through and through. Think open air, German-inspired beers, and a peaceful setting that makes you want to hang out all day. Their lagers and dunkels are top-notch.
Thirsty Barrel Taphouse & Grille – Grass Valley, CA
A lively spot in the heart of downtown Grass Valley, this place nails the combo of great beer and great food. The tap list is always rotating, the vibe is chill, and the grub holds its own. Whether you're in for a pint or a full meal, Thirsty Barrel delivers.
Grass Valley Brewing Co. – Grass Valley, CA
This spot feels like the heartbeat of downtown Grass Valley. They brew a nice mix of styles—IPAs, stouts, lighter beers—and host live music pretty often. It’s lively, local, and just a solid place to post up with a beer.If you’re heading up into the foothills or just looking for a good place for a good beer, these are the spots I always recommend (and happily return to). Great beer, good people, and the kind of relaxed energy that reminds you why you came in the first place.Let me know if you try any of these—or if there’s a place I need to check out next. Cheers!
