Nevada City Victorian Christmas Starts Dec. 6: What Living Here Is Like

by Bob Sawyer

Nevada City CA historic downtown lit up at night, home of Victorian Christmas

If you have ever wondered what living in Nevada City is really like, pick a December evening and walk down Broad Street during Victorian Christmas. This year the event runs Sundays, December 6, 13, and 20, from 1:30 to 6 p.m., and Wednesdays, December 9 and 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. It has been a town tradition since 1978, and it tells you more about this place than any listing description can.

I have lived in Nevada County for over 40 years, so I have seen this event from every angle: as a kid, as a parent, and now as an agent who gets asked about it by almost every buyer who visits in the winter.

Living in Nevada City During Victorian Christmas

The gas lamps get fresh cedar and pine swags, roughly 500 feet of garland goes up along the balconies, and a 25-foot locally sourced tree goes up in Robinson Plaza. Costumed carolers wander the hilly streets. There are more than 100 artisan vendors, free roasted chestnuts, and Father Christmas on the Sundays.

It is a lot of fun. It is also a real working town with real neighbors, and that is the part I want you to see.

  • Streets close. Broad and Commercial Streets are closed to through traffic during the event, and downtown parking is very limited.
  • Shuttles help. Shuttles run from the Rood Center and a new Bodhi Hive lot for $8 per adult, and kids under 15 ride free. On Wednesdays there is also a free shuttle between downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City.
  • Weather is part of it. The event goes on rain or shine, unless conditions get extreme.

If you are thinking about a home close to downtown, spend one of these evenings getting a feel for the foot traffic, the noise, and the parking. Some people love being steps from the action. Others realize they would rather be a few minutes out. Both answers are fine, and it is far better to find out before you make an offer.

What Nevada City Homes Cost Right Now

Here is what the Metrolist MLS numbers show for Nevada City. The most recent month I have is July, so treat it as a snapshot and not a forecast:

  • 69 active listings
  • Average list price of about $866,000
  • Average sale price of about $699,000
  • About 74 days on market
  • 21 homes sold

The gap between list and sale price is worth noticing. Nevada City has a wide mix of historic homes near downtown, newer builds, and larger rural parcels, so the average moves a lot depending on what sells in a given month. That is why I look at individual streets and conditions with my clients, not just the town average.

Is Nevada City or Grass Valley Right for You?

Victorian Christmas is the kind of event that makes people fall for Nevada City. But the two towns are only a few minutes apart and feel quite different. Nevada City is more walkable, more arts focused, and smaller. Grass Valley has a bigger everyday shopping base and its own holiday traditions, including the Cornish Christmas celebration that starts November 27. I wrote about that one here: Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley.

If you are still deciding between the two, my guide to the best places to live in Nevada County covers the day-to-day differences.

How I Would Use December If You Are Thinking of Moving Here

Winter is a great time to test a town. You see the real weather, the real traffic, and the real community. Here is what I suggest:

  • Visit on a Wednesday evening first. It is a little calmer than the Sundays.
  • Ride the shuttle once, so you know how a typical event day feels for residents.
  • Drive the neighborhoods outside downtown the next morning, when things are quiet.
  • Check out more local ideas on my things to do in Nevada County page.

Dates and schedules come from the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, and they can change, so check the chamber's Victorian Christmas page before you go.
