My Favorite Golf Courses In and Around Nevada County

I took up golf about 10 years ago, and let’s just say… it’s a humbling game. Most of my shots keep me (and many others) laughing, but every once in a while I hit a really good one—and that’s what keeps me coming back. ⛳️

The great news is, we’re spoiled for choice around here. Nevada County and the surrounding Sierra Foothills have so many amazing courses, from quick 9-holers to championship layouts with views that make you forget how many balls you just lost. Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order) …

1. Nevada County Country Club (Grass Valley)

This is a true local gem. Founded back in 1926, it’s one of the oldest courses in California. It’s a walkable, flat, 9-hole layout with tons of character, and the historic clubhouse makes it feel extra special.

2. Lake Wildwood Golf Course (Penn Valley)

Inside the Lake Wildwood community, this 18-hole course has gorgeous fairways and lake views. It’s a great mix of fun and challenging—and if you’re lucky enough to live here, it’s right in your backyard.

3. DarkHorse Golf Club (Auburn)

DarkHorse is often ranked as one of the top public courses in Northern California. Designed by Keith Foster, it combines dramatic elevation changes with strategic bunkering, making it both visually stunning and a real test of skill.

4. Alta Sierra Country Club (Grass Valley)

Another local favorite, Alta Sierra is an 18-hole course winding through the pines and oaks. It has a welcoming membership community and a clubhouse that’s always buzzing with events and tournaments.

5. Lake of the Pines Golf Course (Auburn)

My home course! I live on the par-3 15th hole inside the Lake of the Pines community. This private course wraps around the lake and offers beautiful lake views and a relaxed vibe. It’s a nice course for golfers of all levels and always feels like a little getaway.

6. Winchester Country Club (Meadow Vista)

If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, Winchester is a must. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr., it’s challenging, gorgeous, and has incredible Sierra Foothill views.

7. The Ridge Golf Course (Auburn)

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., The Ridge is known for its rolling hills and natural beauty. It’s one of those courses that feels like a mini-vacation every time you play.

8. Black Oak Golf Course (Auburn)

Black Oak is a relaxed, family-friendly 9-hole course tucked into the oak trees of Auburn. It’s affordable, welcoming to all skill levels, and a great spot if you’re looking for a casual round without the pressure of a championship layout. Locals love the laid-back vibe—and it’s the kind of place where the community feel is just as strong as the golf.
